Fallout 4 on Xbox Series

With a post published on X, Bethesda wanted to clarify the situation relating to Fallout 4 Quality Mode on Xbox Seriesintroduced with the next-gen upgrade published last week, specifying that, contrary to what was previously indicated, it offers 4K and 60 fps as the Performance mode. In practice, all graphics presets offer the same basic resolution and performance.

The difference between the two graphics modes is that that Performance lowers the graphic details to ensure greater framerate stability, at least according to what Bethesda reported.

“Quick note on the Fallout 4 Next Gen update on Xbox Series “Performance mode is more aggressive in reducing settings to maintain this goal. Hopefully this clears up the confusion.”

The reason for the misunderstanding is partly Digital Foundry’s fault, partly Betheda’s fault

The clarification from the Microsoft studio came following a report from Thomas Morgan of Digital Foundry, according to which the Quality mode of Fallout 4 on Xbox Series bugs and it is not activated, as the game continues to run in 4K and 60 fps after selecting it.

With hindsight we know that this is not the case, but it must be said that Morgan simply referred to the official details indicated by Bethesda in the update notes, which state that the Quality mode offers a 4K resolution and framerate anchored at 30 fps:

  • Performance Mode: 60 FPS, 4K resolution, Standard settings, relies on dynamic resolution scaling.
  • Quality Mode: 30 FPS*, 4K resolutionUltra settings, should not require dynamic resolution scaling.

*When connecting to a 120 Hz screen, Quality mode will aim for 40 FPS. When connecting to a 1440p screen, the title will run in 1440p resolution at 60 FPS on Ultra settings

However, the flaws reported on PC remain, given that with the publication of the Fallout 4 update, compatibility problems were reported with many of the mods published from 2015 to today.
