Google, the next foldable could have a new name: Pixel 9 Pro Fold

In recent months, many rumors have circulated about the next generation of the Pixel Fold, the foldable smartphone that Google announced last year, during Google I/O 2023.

Until today, assuming that the Mountain View company had nevertheless decided to keep this product category separate following its own precise nomenclature, this new foldable it was always called “Pixel Fold 2”. However, as reported by Android Authority, which cites a company “insider”, it seems that Google has decided to align this new foldable with the rest of the Pixel 9 range which will be launched in autumn calling it “Pixel 9 Pro Fold”.

This, therefore, should be the complete range of Pixel 9 with the related code names:

  • Pixel 9 – code name “tokay”
  • Pixel 9 Pro – code name “caiman”
  • Pixel 9 Pro XL – code name “komodo”
  • Pixel 9 Pro Fold – code name “comet”

So far, rendering aside, little information has emerged on the hardware characteristics of the individual devices. What seems certain is the processor, the Tensor G4 which should be present on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL. Logic dictates that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, being part of the same range, will also be equipped with this SoC and that performance, consequently, should be similar on all four devices.

Design-wise, Android Authority says the Pixel 9 Pro Fold it will be similar to the other three models. The author of the report claims to have seen the renderings of the smartphone, but did not share other information, limiting himself to publishing the images that we have already seen in recent months, relating to what we then called the Pixel Fold 2.

As noted in the report, if Google actually decides to place its foldable alongside the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup, it could also mean that it wants this device is seen more as a top of the range rather than being a separate, niche and overpriced device.

With this move, moreover, Google would the only manufacturer to integrate a foldable into the “main” family of smartphones making it more of an option when buying a high-end Pixel rather than a different choice altogether. Other manufacturers, in fact, create completely separate lines of foldable smartphones, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z or Motorola’s Razr.

According to what has been leaked so far, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold should have an 8-inch internal display, an external 6.29 inch,up to 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and a completely redesigned camera layout, more in line with the rest of the Pixel 9 range. There is no precise information yet regarding the battery capacity (probably 5000mAh) , the charging speed and the sensors used for the cameras.

It also remains to be seen when Google will decide to launch this Pixel 9 Pro Fold. If the company actually chooses to include it in the fall lineup, towards the end of the year we will be able to witness the simultaneous launch of four Pixel 9s.
