Pine Key, an island located in Tampa Bay, Florida, known as “Beer Can Island,” has been put up for sale at $14.2 million. What’s surprising is that this move comes just six years after the island was purchased by a group of friends for less than $64,000 with the intention of using it as a home base for their floating tiki bar. The group of four investors invested about $5 million to renovate it.
The initial project
Initially, the idea was just to have a base for their floating tiki bar. However, the island soon transformed into a popular location for weddings, parties and concerts, attracting thousands of onlookers. “We are grateful for the great support we have received from people over the years,” said Cole Weaver, one of the principal owners. Pine Key’s history as a place of recreation is not recent: before its purchase by Weaver and his associates, the island was an important gathering point for locals. In fact, it was often possible to find seas of cans and bottles after some very busy evenings.
The transformation and the problems
With James Wester, who specializes in nightclub promotion and management, and John Gadd, a financier on the project, the group saw an opportunity to completely transform Pine Key. They added infrastructure such as bathrooms, thatched-roof booths, a water slide and a bar, thinking of everything people require from a private party venue. Despite initial enthusiasm, Hillsborough County officials have raised concerns about the use of the island, arguing that it should be preserved as a nature preserve, especially for protected species such as manatees. The county sheriff’s office’s ability to respond promptly to emergencies has also been called into question.
The sale
Pine Key’s next owner will face significant challenges in making the island a place for parties and events. Despite this, the location offers a unique opportunity for those seeking an exclusive retreat or looking to invest in one of the few private islands in Tampa Bay. “This opportunity is extremely rare,” Weaver said, noting Pine Key’s unique value. Anyone willing to take on the challenge of balancing development and conservation could find Beer Can Island not just an island, but a true treasure.
