Instagram introduces a new feature that will obscure explicit images sent in DMs. Here’s what will happen in the next updates!

Instagram is working on a new feature that aims to protect teenagers. In the coming months the platform intends to add a new security function in DMs (private messages) which will have the aim to limit the spread of nud0 photos. In fact, younger people often come across scam profiles that implement the sextortion. This is a form of blackmail that uses explicit photos sent by the victim. Behind the threat of making them public, the criminal requests sums of money or even other explicit material. So what does Instagram plan to do to protect users?

The whole point of this update is that photos containing nudity will automatically be blurred and whoever receives them will be able to decide whether to view them or not. This option will be active by default on profiles belonging to minors. Adults* will be shown a notification encouraging them to activate it. In addition to the blurring of the image, there will also be warnings aimed at reminding you that sending explicit photos can be dangerous.

When nudity protection is turned on, anyone sending explicit images will receive a message saying: “Be careful when sharing sensitive forums. Other people may be taking screenshots or sharing your photos without you knowing. You can unsend the photo if you’ve changed your mind, but others may have already seen it“. However, if someone tries to forward sensitive images, they will receive a message that is intended to discourage the action. “Before sharing, be responsible. Sharing someone’s sensitive photos may violate our guidelines or be illegal. It can be difficult to control what happens to a photo once it is shared. People could use the photos to harm the person depicted“.

There will also be messages reminding anyone who receives an explicit photo that there is no need to respond. Remembering that it is possible stop conversing at any time if you don’t feel comfortable. In addition to these warnings, screens with safety tips will also be introduced so that users can use DMs in the safest way possible.

Have you ever received this type of photo?
