Developed by Chinese studio Up Software and published by Cube Game, Sword and Fairy 4 Remake it’s a Turn-based single player role-playing game made in Unreal Engine 5currently planned for PC and consoles, although a release date has not yet been announced.
The official trailer, titled “Unpredictable Divine Will”immediately sparked debate among enthusiasts and professionals. The combat system shown closely resembles that of Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33starting from the dynamic interface up to the more action approach based on timed saves. The use of the camera and its movements during battles also clearly evoke the work of Sandfall Interactive.
The official description invites players to embark on a journey in search of immortals together with the group led by Tianhe Yunwhile a truth that has remained hidden for a long time slowly begins to emerge.
The Legend of Sword and Fairy is a historical Chinese video game saga inspired by mythology and genre xianxiaconsisting of nine main chapters. The first episode dates back to 1995 on PC and achieved enormous success in China, both critically and commercially, giving rise to numerous sequels and spin-offs over the years.
The Legend of Sword and Fairy 4 actually represents the fifth chapter of the main series and serves as a prequel to the third episode. The latest title published, The Legend of Sword and Fairy 7was released in 2021 on PC and arrived in the West in 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series Sword and Fairy: Together Forever. At the time it was often described as a possible alternative to the more recent ones Final Fantasynot surprisingly one of the main sources of inspiration for Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33.
Precisely for this reason, many fans are drawing a direct connection between Chiaroscuro e Sword and Fairy 4 Remakegoing so far as to accuse the development team of having copied Sandfall Interactive’s work. In the comments you can read explicit accusations, sarcastic jokes and direct comparisons on the combat system. Other users, however, urge caution, claiming that the game simply shows the characteristics of a modern turn-based RPG, with references to the Personaand remind us that the series has a long tradition behind it.
Cube Game confirmed that an English version of the trailer will be released in the next few days by a publisher regionale. That will probably be the opportunity to better understand the identity of Sword and Fairy 4 Remake and clarify whether it is an obvious inspiration or a case of stylistic convergence.
