The former dancer suffered a stroke and spent the night between Monday and Tuesday in intensive care and under plasmapheresis (the purification of the blood) for infection. The 46-year-old Russian had his limbs amputated last week. Now, however, he risks his life. His wife Oksana Domnina in recent days flaunted optimism, but the doctors are now pessimistic.
Roman Sergeevich Kostomarov was one of the best performers of his sport internationally and among the many titles, in dance he won two gold medals at the World Championships (2004 and 2005), three gold medals at the European Championships (2004, 2005 and 2006). Without, of course, forgetting thegold of the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics paired with Tatiana Navka.
After his sports career, he continued to dance in shows and exhibitions. However, age is making itself felt and last month, to participate in one outdoor show organized by another great championIlya Averbukh (Silver at SaltLake City 2022), worked on very low temperatures. So last January 10, emergency hospitalization arrived in Kommunarka, on the outskirts of Moscow, with a very high fever. And from that moment an endless ordeal began: bilateral pneumonia, loss of consciousness, infection spreading throughout the bodyartificial coma, amputation of the feet (and possibly also of the hands). The situation is however degenerate. Because after another surgery, Kostomarov’s condition worsened with the failure of the lungs: the right one does not work independently, while there is fibrosis in the left one with accumulation of fluid. Accumulation that is also occurring in other parts of the body due to reduced functionality of kidneys.
In short, the situation is really complex and very serious. “The process of disintegration of all organs has begun. Considering the seriousness of the situation, there is most likely a general failure of multiple organs, including renal failure. Edema in the kidneys was the result of many serious disturbances in the body»Dr. Anna Korobkina, a nephrologist at the Israeli Hadassah Medical Center, which belongs to the Kommunarka hospital, told the Russian press.
