Speaking to Sport Mediaset, Riccardo Trevisani commented on Italy’s flop at the European Championships: “We must really evaluate what this nation is: apart from the victory in 2021, we missed the 2018 World Cup with one coach, missed the 2022 World Cup with another coach and had a terrible Euro 2024 with yet another coach. So it’s not just Spalletti’s problem, we’ve been ridiculous for a long time”.
“We have Donnarumma and ten other players, it’s not enough to have just one champion. Take England: they played badly and then Bellingham solved it for them. Who scores a goal like that here? Spalletti made the wrong choices and made some mistakes in his readings but it’s just part of a bigger problem, he arrived in the running because his predecessor ran away. Who do we start from? Difficult question. For example, who has the attributes to play in the blue shirt. If you’re strong, you do well even if everything around you goes badly: look at Donnarumma or Calafiori for example. Let’s start from the really strong ones, including Barella and Bastoni. The others will only deserve it on the pitch”.
