he wanted to target Real Madrid players

The Guardia Civil operation led to 9 arrests in several Spanish cities

The Islamic terrorism has returned to threaten Spanish football. According to ‘El Confidencial’, in fact, the information services of the Guardia Civil have dismantled in recent weeks a network that intended to attack the Santiago Bernabeu stadium and invited its militants to shoot at Real Madrid players and fans. They were in the operation nine people arrested in Salt (Girona), Algeciras (Cadiz), Anta (Almeria) and Tenerife.

In a poster released online you can see a hooded man shooting and the lens of his telescopic sight pointed towards the Real Madrid bus. “My dear brother. Wait at a place near the players’ arrival point. Target them and their followers” is the ominous message on the poster.

In close collaboration with Europol and the American FBI, the operation of the Spanish authorities aimed to target the self-proclaimed I’lam Foundation, one of the major propaganda centers linked to the Islamic State, with radio stations, news agencies, companies of video production and social network profiles that spread radical content in a multitude of languages, including Spanish.

The Islamic State is no stranger to this type of threat and had already created panic last April by threatening to attack the stadiums where the Champions League quarter-finals were being played.
