Despite being away and with two yellow cards on their backs, it is La Rochelle who goes through the barrage and gains access to the semi-finals of the Top 14, where they will face Ange Capuozzo’s Toulouse. Nothing to do however for Paolo Garbisi and his Toulon, defeated at home at Stade Mayol 29-34.

The match was played last night, Saturday 15 June, with the Italian fly-half on the pitch for the full 80 minutes but without making a difference. Indeed, the comment on his performance made by the transalpine portal is harsh Rugbyrama.

On Rugbyrama Garbisi was awarded a 4, with this comment: “In the barrage against La Rochelle he failed to lead the Toulon group. He had a lot of desire and it showed from the start of the match, he tried a lot, sometimes too much, like in his restart from 22 meters when he was penalised. An action that subsequently led to Jegou’s goal. Just when the Rouge et Noir could still hope to get back into the game, he missed a kick in the penalty area and, in a certain sense, reduced his team’s last hopes.”

However, it must be underlined that all the votes assigned by the French portal to Toulon are clear insufficiencies: the best of the votes is 5. La Rochelle, on the other hand, was able to benefit from the excellent performances of the young third row Jegou and the fly-half Hastoy, capable of giving a response after a not particularly brilliant season. And this despite two yellow cards late on, which almost paved the way for Toulon’s comeback.

A Top 14 season that was generally not exciting for the entire Stade Rochelais, but at the decisive moment they were able to put in an excellent performance and a lot of experience in playing one-off matches. But now the path will get even tougher: on Friday 21 June La Rochelle awaits the semi-final with Ange Capuozzo’s Toulouse. For Paolo Garbisi, however, the Top 14 season has ended and he will now be able to concentrate on his return with the blue shirt.
