Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham: “We are funding a unit within the British police that will deal with prosecution.”

The Football Association (FA) will provide funding to police to help prosecute people who abuse England players on social media. This was stated by the CEO of the government body Mark Bullingham ahead of the European Championships. The one who reports it is Reuters.

Previous social media involving England footballers

Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were targets of online abuse after missing penalties in the 3-2 defeat against Italy in the final of the previous edition of the tournament.

In 2022, a British teenager was sentenced to six weeks in prison for racially abusing Rashford after the final, while a man who live-streamed the trio on Facebook was jailed for 10 weeks.

England, Mark Bullingham’s statements on the social problem

“In the past we have put together all the data, essentially a package of evidence, to give to the police for prosecution,” Bullingham told British media.

“But this time we have gone further and are funding a unit within the British police that will carry out the prosecution.”

Bullingham said the funding would cost the FA around £25,000 ($31,952), but added that the figure could change depending on the number of court cases.

England will start the European Championship against Serbia on Sunday at 9pm. The other two Group C matches will be against Denmark (20 June) and Slovenia (25 June).
