Formula 1 Sauber GP Canada – A long day of work is expected at Sauber after the results obtained in free practice for the Canadian Grand Prix, the ninth round of the 2024 Formula 1 world championship. 14th and 17th respectively, Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou were unable to collect the feedback they were hoping for from the car, an aspect that will have to push them to improve in view of this evening’s qualifying. It should be noted that the Chinese driver lost much of FP1 due to contact with the barriers exiting Turn 5. An episode that caused his left front suspension to break.

Bottas on Friday’s free practice in Canada

“It seems like we’re in a better position than where we were in Monaco, which is obviously encouraging for the weekend. Today’s rain affected both sessions and like many we found ourselves facing different situations during each run on the track. This did not allow us to obtain a detailed reading on the behavior and performance of the car. However, the feeling is positive and we managed to do a decent number of laps during FP2, collecting important data for us and for the team in Hinwil. With variable weather forecasts it will be important to fully trust the car. We have to push the car to the limit regardless of the conditions.”

Zhou misses most of the first free practice sessions

“It’s great to be back racing in Montreal, even though it was a difficult day for everyone. During FP1 I expected more grip on the track and this assessment led me to have the beginning of aquaplaning in turn 5. I got the car back in time avoiding much worse ones, but in the end I still damaged the suspension, losing precious time in track. The team did a great job between FP1 and FP2 and fortunately we managed to do some laps in both wet and dry conditions. Given the mixed conditions, however, it is difficult to say where we stand. The car has taken a step forward compared to Monaco, but we will have more precise feedback tomorrow. I can’t wait to race tomorrow.”
