Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, seeded number 11, reach the round of 16 of the Roland Garros 2024 men’s doubles tennis tournament after beating the Brazilian pair of Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo with a double 7-5 in an hour and 44 minutes of play. In the next round the Azzurri will face the Australian duo of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson.
In the first set The South Americans started better and in the fourth game, after 14 points, at the fourth break point they took the lead 3-1. The Brazilians immediately face a chance for an immediate counterbreak, but they save the advantage and go 4-1. From that moment, however, the blue couple takes the lead, scores a score of 16 points to 4 and turns the situation around by serving for the set at 5-4. Matos and Melo find the counterbreak at fifteen, but immediately afterwards they give up the serve to zero and the Azzurri return to serve for the set. Vavassori finds itself trailing 15-40, but the Italian pair wins the last four points played and closes at 7-5 in 56 minutes.
In the second game the plot is reversed: Bolelli and Vavassori hit the break at the first opportunity in the third game and go up 2-1, then canceling the ball for the immediate counterbreak and taking it to 3-1. The Italian pair confirms the break margin and goes to serve for the match at 5-4, finding themselves two points away from the match at 30-0, but at that point the Brazilians win four points in a row and operate the counterbreak. The Azzurri, however, snatch the serve at thirty from the South Americans again and then Vavassori holds the serve to sanction 7-5 in 48 minutes which is worth the round of 16.
