McEnroe defends Novak Djokovic on his choice of coach: “This is ridiculous”

The most anticipated match of today at Roland Garros is undoubtedly the last one on the central court between the world number one Novak Djokovic and our Lorenzo Musetti, who appeared quite regenerated after his latest performances.

The Balkan champion is called to present a good version of himself and cannot afford any further missteps; defeat would close the doors of the Slam in Paris and would mean he would overtake Jannik Sinner in the rankings in first place.

For this and for many reasons there is great curiosity to see the performance of Nole, a tennis player who has had various difficulties during this year and this is demonstrated by the zero titles in 2024. For some, Djokovic’s choice to fire the his historic coach Goran Ivanisevic and the crisis would also be linked to the absence of a full-time coach.

A former tennis player from the past spoke about the matter, a legend of the caliber of John McEnroe who expressed himself quite clearly.

McEnroe’s words on the coaching question for Djokovic

Djokovic is aiming for the title, despite the less than perfect conditions the Serbian always thinks about that result and remains among the favourites.

John McEnroe spoke bluntly to Eurosport’s microphones: “I read that Novak Djokovic needs a coach, I think all this is ridiculous. Basically, according to people, he needs a permanent person to tell him what to do on the pitch and not I don’t agree with this theory at all.”

McEnroe explained his statements thus: “If he wants someone around, that’s fine with me. It worked incredibly well because no one, whether he or any of his fans, would have ever dreamed of seeing him win 24 Grand Slam titles.

I remember a match against Monfils, he won in five sets and I thought he was good and brave but if someone had told me he would have won 24 Slams I would have called him crazy.”
