Atalanta-Torino 3-0 and Roma out of the Champions League

Atalanta beats Torino 3-0 on the last day of the championship, takes fourth place in the standings and excludes Roma from the next Champions League. The Nerazzurri, fresh from their triumph in the Europa League, beat the Granata with goals from Scamacca (26′), Lookman (43′) and Pasalic (71′) from a penalty.

The success allows the Nerazzurri to rise to 69 points and take fourth place from Bologna, fifth at 68. Roma closes the championship in sixth position: the placement would have guaranteed the team coached by De Rossi qualification for the next Champions League if Atalanta had finished in fifth place. Roma, on the other hand, must be content with playing the Europa League.

Finally, the Nerazzurri also have to recover the match against Fiorentina and could finish Serie A in third place, ahead of Juventus.

The match

After a start in which the Granata played the game with Zapata and Ilic making themselves dangerous, Atalanta increased their intensity and became masters of the pitch. The Nerazzurri scored twice in the first half, putting the match on ice. The first goal arrives in the 26th minute with De Keteleare serving in the Scamacca area, the center forward turns right and hits the ball just wide of the post. Before the rest, the encore still inspired by De Keteleare. This time the Belgian triggers Pasalic who finishes centrally: Gemello lets the ball slip away and Lookman arrives who only has to push towards goal for the 2-0.

At the beginning of the second half, Toro tried to react with Pellegri but Atalanta didn’t give up and in the 52nd minute they scored again with Scamacca: the goal, however, was disallowed because De Keteleare was unable to keep the ball on the pitch. In the 66th minute the Nerazzurri scored again with Lookman but this goal was also canceled out due to a foul on Ilic by Scamacca in the area. Atalanta’s hat-trick came shortly after: in the 71st minute a penalty for the Nerazzurri for a foul on Lookman. Pasalic takes the spot and beats Gemello for 3-0. Torino fails to react and Gasperini’s team sinks and in the 76th minute another goal is disallowed, again by Lookman this time for offside. Last gasp of the Granata in the 90th minute but Rossi blocks the home goal, denying Ilic the goal.
