F1 Monaco, Hamilton best in Free Practice 1, damage to Ferrari Leclerc

Maybe it’s because the Monaco F1 GP always evokes his idol Ayrton Sennait may be that Mercedes wants to give new signs of competitiveness, in any case Lewis Hamilton the fastest in free practice 1 on the Monte Carlo street circuit. His W14 set the best time with 1’12″169 (soft red tyre), just 29 thousandths better than Oscar Piastri with a very solid McLaren in “Ayrton” livery. Russell’s other Mercedes was third, then the second McLaren by Norris.

Ferrari’s fifth Charles Leclercwhich races on the streets of his home: for a long time the fastest, the Ferrari driver in the second part of the session feared having damaged the bottom of the SF-24 after having hit some carbon debris scattered on the track following the accident in Zhou Guanyu with Sauber. The single-seater does not appear to have suffered any particular problems, but the mechanics immediately got to work to verify that there were no problems of any kind. It must however be said, and this is an important detail, that Leclerc did not push with the soft tyres, and therefore his fifth fastest time, two tenths behind Hamilton, is very promising indeed.. Tenth Carlos Sainz with the other Ferrari.

red bull back

The surprise of the first session was certainly seeing the two Red Bulls in difficulty. Not so much that of Sergio Perez (12th), but above all that of Max Verstappen, who is only 11th and has reported quite a few handling problems with his RB20. Naturally too early to say whether the world champions are in real difficulty, but while the two McLarens and Ferrari immediately found themselves at ease, Red Bull seemed to have to chase. The second session scheduled for 5pm will provide further answers. Also ahead of the Red Bull were the two Aston Martins and the two Racing Bulls.
