LA SPEZIA – Nothing to be done for Venezia, who closed the regular season badly by losing in La Spezia and failing to overtake Como, who were also held to a draw by Cosenza. And so Paolo Vanoli’s team only deludes itself for a while, then collapses in the second half and will only have to think about the playoffs. The promotion play-offs will enter the scene on Monday 20 May. It is played in the midst of incredible tension. Spezia is playing for survival to avoid the playouts, Venezia must win, hoping to receive good news from Como. Vanoli surprisingly chooses Andersen in midfield, otherwise the lineup is as expected, with Pohjanpalo and Gytkjaer on the pitch to support the weight of the attack. Spezia dangerous at the start: in the 6th minute, another nice cross from Reca and Svoboda anticipates Pio Esposito and sends it into a corner. Venezia shows up in the 13th minute: Andersen’s corner and header from the American midfielder which ends up not far wide. In the 16th minute, a gigantic opportunity for Spezia, which sees Di Serio face to face with Joronen, who manages to save with his face. On the other side, here’s the blaze of Venezia: Andersen’s corner and Idzes’ header that goes up into the sky and beats Zoet. Venezia passes and Como struggles with Cosenza. In the 26th minute Venezia came close to doubling their lead: splendid action by Candela who crossed into the middle for Gytkjaer, who was very good at heading but with Zoet in his way, then Pohjanpalo wasted a great chance. In the 36th minute Joronen was again decisive, stopping a clumsy deflection from Candela towards his own goal. In the meantime, the news arrives that gives wings to the orange-greens, with the advantage of Cosenza signed by Tutino. Incandescent final, with Spezia attacking Joronen’s goal. An assault that continues, furiously, even at the beginning of the second half, when the impression is that Joronen’s goal is on the verge of capitulating: in the 6th minute Elia comes within a hair’s breadth of equalising, then in the 12th minute it is Pio Esposito who passes the ball past Joronen scored the 1-1 goal. Venezia exited the match and were overtaken in the 16th minute: Elia’s cross and Reca put the ball behind Joronen. Venezia is like a beaten boxer, but struggles to get back on track. First Gytkjaer heads it clearly in the 27th minute, then shortly after it’s Busio who has the good ball but doesn’t hit the target. In the final Salvatore Esposito once again finds an excellent Joronen on a free kick and Altare gets kicked out, thus ending in the worst possible way an evening to forget
