Cycling in mourning, Gino Reggiani has passed away

Modena, 10 May 2024 – The world of cycling Reggio Emilia and Modena he is in mourning for the passing of Gino Reggiani. Originally from S.Polo d’Enza where he was born on 23 December 1931, he approached cycling to follow in the footsteps of great champions such as Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali to emulate them.

After making his debut among the students at the beginning of the fifties, he landed among the amateurs wearing the jersey of Velo Club Reggio which was the club that excelled in the large panorama of that period when cycling was the most popular sport together with football. Among the amateurs under the guidance of Giannetto Cimurri, masseur of Fausto Coppi and the national team, it won the Coppa Italica twice (formerly the King’s Cup), the Milan-Asti and the Collecchio Cup.

These results allowed him to become a professional with the Lygie, participating in the Giro di Lombardia, Giro dell’Emilia, Milan-Turin, Giro di Romagna and many other races. Once he abandoned competitive cycling he moved with his family to work in the Modena area Castelnuovo Rangone, where he managed the bar of the local bowling alley for a long time. It is in this structure that the first editions of the annual ex-cycling racers took place with the ‘La Bici al Chiodo’ Trophy which saw Franco Ballerini, Paolo Bettini, and the legendary CTAlfredo Martini awarded among many.

Reggiani has always been among the organizers of the Award where he took care of the logistical aspect with great patience at each edition even when due to space constraints the awards ceremony took place in the lower Reggio area for him, a return home. Having been hospitalized for a few days at the Baggiovara hospital, he passed away on Wednesday. The funeral will take place this morning at 9.30 am at the Parish Church of Castelnuovo where the Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated.
