HONG KONG – The harsh law of Italy coach Stefano Cerioni also imposes itself in Hong Kong: four Italian medals in the two individual competitions of the foil World Cup stage on the Asian platforms, with Guillaume Bianchi triumphing in the men’s event, accompanied on the podium by Tommaso Marini who finished third, while in the women’s competition Elena Tangherlini took silver and the bronze went to the Italian flag-bearer in Paris 2024, Arianna Errigo.
An authentic demonstration of strength, yet another, for the Italian foil. Guillaume Bianchi, from Frascato of the Fiamme Gialle, wins his first success in the World Cup at the end of a fantastic performance which also saw him winner in the semi-final derby over world champion Tommaso Marini, the Ancona native of the Fiamme Oro who flies double figure in his palmares with the tenth career medal in the world championship circuit. And among the men to record also the placings among the “top 8” of Filippo Macchi and Davide Filippi, who finished in fifth and sixth place respectively.

Great Italy also among women: second silver season in the Cup for Elena Tangherlini, from the Marche Army, who comes close to achieving another feat just like last January in Paris after a great performance, and Arianna Errigo is always amazing, the Carabinieri from Lombardy who with the bronze in Hong Kong he reaches 58 medals in the world circuit, mind-boggling numbers. At the foot of the podium, in the women’s competition, Francesca Palumbo who placed sixth.

Star of the day Guillaume Bianchi. At the start of the day, the financier born in 1997 scored a double 15-7, first against the Polish Jakubowski and then against the Korean Kim. In the round of 16 the 15-1 success over the Frenchman Lefort preceded Bianchi’s landing on the podium, thanks to the success over the Korean Lee with the result of 15-13. In the semi-final, in the all-Italian challenge with his partner Tommaso Marini, Guillaume won 15-3 and thus flew to the last act, where he put the exclamation point on his masterpiece match by beating the Japanese Shikine 15-10 and thus taking home the his first success in the World Cup.
In a sign of continuity, podium number 10 in his career on the circuit for Tommaso Marini, this time on the third step. The policeman from Ancona first eliminated the Australian Bosnic 15-7 and then the French Chastanet 15-3. In the round of 16 the success over another transalpine, Loisel, with a score of 15-10, opened the doors of the “top 8” for Tommy, who flew into the “medal zone” thanks to the 15-11 with which he overcame the American Louie. For the reigning world champion, stopped in the semi-final in the derby with Bianchi, a valuable bronze. Having said the excellent performances of Filippo Macchi and Davide Filippi, fifth and sixth, Giulio Lombardi (14th) and Edoardo Luperi (16th) also entered the “top 16”. Following, Francesco Ingargiola 21st, Alessio Foconi 35th and Federico Pistorio 51st.

Silver and bronze for Italy in the women’s foil by Elena Tangherlini, who arrived from the qualifiers, and for Arianna Errigo who thus celebrated in her own way the very recent election as Italian flag-bearer for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. For both, the day started with victories of 15-8, by Tangherlini over the Japanese Takeyama and by Errigo over the American Cho. And in the following round, the Italian derby for both medalists who train in Frascati: Elena Tangherlini overcame the number 1 on the scoreboard Martina Favaretto with the last thrust, 15-14, while Arianna Errigo defeated 15-8 Anna Cristino, who was fresh from his first podium in Tbilisi. In the round of 16, the Army team from the Marche won a 15-13 victory over the American Rhodes, while the Carabinieri champion from Brianza beat the Polish Walczyk-Klimaszyk 15-5. In the assaults that were worth the podium Elena beat the American Devore 15-11, while Ary won 15-8 over the Japanese Kikuchi. In the semi-final Tangherlini continued her exciting journey against the USA by beating Dubrovich 15-7 and gaining the pass to the final, which Errigo instead missed, stopped at 15-13 by the other American Weintraub who managed to come back in the final stages of the match . For Arianna Errigo, however, a bronze that glitters, just as the silver of Elena Tangherlini shines, who only in the final, again against the American Weintraub, was overcome 15-11, thus climbing onto the second step of the podium. At the foot of the podium was Francesca Palumbo (6th), who had won the Italian derby in the round of 16 with world champion Alice Volpi (10th). Following, 17th Martina Favaretto, 18th Martina Batini, 22nd Erica Cipressa, 24th Anna Cristino, 25th Martina Sinigalia and 36th Camilla Mancini.

After today’s splendid day, tomorrow Italy will return to the stage in the two team events that will conclude the foil World Cup stage in Hong Kong. In the women’s race, coach Stefano Cerioni will field Arianna Errigo, Martina Batini, Martina Favaretto and Alice Volpi. In the men’s competition the blue quartet will be made up of Guillaume Bianchi, Alessio Foconi, Filippo Macchi and Tommaso Marini.
