The first uphill finish of the Vuelta Femenina rewrites the history of this edition of the Spanish race: the fifth stage of the race – the Huesca – Alto del Fuerte Rapitán. Jaca of 113.9 km – saw the impressive dominance of Demi Vollering. The Dutch champion literally broke the bank in the short final climb – which in 2012 saw Purito Rodriguez’s success in the men’s Vuelta ahead of Chris Froome – inflicting heavy gaps on all her opponents, the best of which were Yara Kastelijn and Elisa Longo Borghiniwhich closed in order.

THE RACE. A fairly quiet day that reawakened in the second part. What animated the stage at the end was the attack of Karlijn Swinkels of UAE ADQ who was reached by the group just 3.2 km from the finish, practically at the beginning of the final climb.

Blanka Kata Vas, second in the general classification, was in difficulty very early on, while mahlia roja Marianne Vos lost the wheels of the best at -3 when Sarah Gigante started the brawl on the 8% climb to take her to the finish line.

At the implacable pace of Demi Vollering only Yara Kastelijn and Elisa Longo Borghini resisted its wheel. Then at 800 meters Vollering accelerates again and goes on to win her first victory of the season, the red jersey and to put a serious threat on the final victory which last year eluded her, in favor of Annemiek Van Vleuten, by just nine seconds.

Unlucky Gaia Realini who was among the best on Alto del Monasterio but was the victim of a fall on the subsequent descent and had to say goodbye to any dream of glory, reaching the finish line seriously late.
