As the month of May approaches in all the main European leagues we are moving towards the end of the regular season, while the various playoff phases are getting ever closer. Various clubs are in the running to access it, others are trying in every way to avoid finding themselves in the red zone of the rankings at the end of the season.

This is happening in the Top 14 and the Premiership, where the 22nd and 16th matchdays have just concluded respectively. There are several Italian players who took to the pitch abroad over the past weekend: in particular Monty Ioane stood out, having scored again with his Lyon.

The blue winger started and gave his contribution in an important success for his team: Lyon gained 5 points from the success against Pau, moving away from the red zone and also overtaking Federico Mori’s Bayonne in the standings. The center wore the number 12 shirt for the Biancocelesti for 75 minutes, but was ultimately beaten 15-34 by Bordeaux.

Things went decidedly better for Pietro Ceccarelli’s Perpignan, on the pitch for 46 minutes, who won 20-25 away against Montpellier. The success takes the Catalans to seventh place and just two points behind Paolo Garbisi’s Toulon.

Toulon played in the first evening of Sunday against La Rochelle, their direct opponent in the standings. The Italian fly-half remained on the pitch for the entire match but the contribution of 7 points to his foot was not enough. The Rossoneri paid for their indiscipline with 3 yellow cards and were not cynical in the final when, instead of going for the posts, they chose to go for the big target. Not only did the goal not arrive, but a few minutes later it was La Rochelle who scored late on, winning 27-17.

In the Premiership, Marco Riccioni with his Saracens was able to celebrate the victory over Bath in Friday’s match, knocking them out of second place in the table. An important success also for Louis Lynagh’s Harlequins, who beat the league leaders, Northampton Saints. The winger still started with number 14 for the entire half, minus the 10 minutes he served for the yellow card in the first half.

Finally in Gloucester-Exeter Chiefs, which ended 17-38, Stephen Varney and Ross Vintcent challenged each other indirectly. The scrum half remained on the pitch until the 60th minute, while the third row only made his appearance in the 75th minute to play the final minutes of the match.
