The Ecuadorian preceded the German Florian Lipowitz and the Spaniard from Ineos-Grenadiers who jumped to the top of the ranking

Everyone was waiting for an attack from the big names and confirmation came during the fourth stage of the Tour of Romandie. To impose oneself on the finish line of Leysin was Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) which seems to have returned to what it once was, upsetting the general classification and thus handing the gold jersey to the Spaniard Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) snatching it from his compatriot Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates).

First phase of the match full of shots and counter shots which saw the attack of seven men, Raul Garcia Pierna (Arkéa – B&B Hotels), Nelson Oliveira (Movistar Team), Bart Lemmen (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Juri Hollman (Alpecin – Deceuninck), Josef Cerny (Soudal Quick-Step) and Dorian Godon And Clement Berthet (Decathlon AG2R World Team), able to take the penultimate climb still in the lead. Despite the attempt to recover by the Ineos men in front, Berthet still remained, caught only on the final climb thanks to excellent work by Egan Bernal, who made himself available to Rodriguez.

The decisive blow, however, came from Carapaz who surprised everyone by going alone and risking being caught in the last meters by a wild man Florian Lipowitz (Bora-Hansgrohe) who had to settle for second place ahead of Rodriguez, third at ten seconds and needed to fly to the top of the ranking. Nothing to be done for Ayuso who had to give up in the last kilometre, slipping in the standings which sees the Iberian leading ahead of Vlasov and Lipowitz.
