The president of the civic merit commission, Carlo Mantero, explained the reasons for the awarding of the Abbondino d’oro to Rugby Como on the stage of the Teatro Sociale on the morning of Saturday 27 April. «Rugby is a sport that goes beyond competition on the field, it is a team game that teaches fundamental values such as respect, loyalty, discipline and solidarity. Rugby Como has promoted these values among its members and has contributed to training young athletes not only physically but also morally. Thanks to this association, many young people have had the opportunity to create friendships, develop their skills and become part of a large family. In essence today we celebrate not only Rugby Como, but the very essence of the sport.”

The Abbondino, in fact, rewards those citizens who have benefited Como in any way, both by raising its prestige through their commitment and talent, and by placing themselves at the service of the institutions with dedication and without personal return. Civic merit consists of a diploma and a medal, which together form the certificate of civic merit.
About fifty athletes were present today at the Club, from the youngest, who went up on stage in person to collect the civic merit from the hands of the mayor of Como Alessandro Rapinese, to the older ones who filled the front rows of the audience at the Club with the purple color of the Rugby Como Asd uniforms. But the members of the sports club in total amount to almost 300, as Mayor Rapinese also recalled as he opened the ball at the Abbondino d’Oro award ceremony and accompanied the public on a “journey” among the nicknames of some of the players who they are part of the big Rugby Como family.

Naturally, the president of the sports association, Michele Cerbo, was also present, followed by the president of the Italian rugby federation, Marzio Innocenti, and the president of the Lombard rugby committee, Maurizio Vancini. Giacomo Bagnasco, first president of the sports club, also spoke next and recalled the difficult beginnings of the history of Rugby Como and the current successes of those athletes who, starting from our territory, have today reached the top of the competitive movement, like Davide Ruggeri and Maria Magatti.
«In this case, we must extend the appreciation that has been shown to Rugby Como to all the sports clubs that in our city, but also throughout Italy, send out on the pitch, in the swimming pool, in the gym and in the sports halls every weekend. sports hundreds of thousands of boys, girls, children and young people”.
Among the public were present the authorities, the entire municipal council, the regional councilor Fermi, the regional councilors Angelo Orsenigo and Anna Dotti, together with the president of the Province Fiorenzo Bongiasca, with the prefect Andrea Polichetti, the police commissioner Marco Calì and the representatives of the police forces.
The presentation of the civic merit was accompanied by the music of the Nota su Nota choir, which performed at various moments of the ceremony and also during the passing of the diploma and medal from the hands of the mayor Rapinese to those of the very young athletes of Rugby Como, on notes of “We are the champions”.
