Tests will take place in Jerez on Monday and Yamaha will bring a brand new bike for Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins to test.
The third official test of the 2024 MotoGP season will take place in Jerez on Monday 29 April. According to what Motorsport.com reports, Yamaha will bring a brand new motorbike for testing Fabio Quartararo And Alex Rins.
Test in Jerez: Yamaha revolutionises itself
Yamaha continues in his process of returning to the top of the charts, totally revolutionizing his YZR-M1. In the Jerez tests on Monday the team Lin Jarvis will provide the two official pilots, Alex Rins And Fabio Quartararo, a motorbike with all new components. Motorsport.com spoke to a member of the team Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP who revealed some of the new features of the M1:
“Yamaha will test a new engine, a new frame, a new swingarm and new aerodynamic elements in Monday’s test; a new motorbike” – Member of the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP team
The new engine will be tested together with the “spec-A prototype”, i.e. the current model that YZR-M1 comes with it. Engine development Yamaha it’s part of what the concessions allow you to do, but this isn’t allowed to other teams. The purpose of this double engine to be tested is to understand if there are any clear improvements. Little by little, other developments will be introduced to understand which ones should be kept and which ones should be discarded.
Yamaha updates: some new features already tested by Crutchlow in Barcelona
As we now know, concessions allow Yamaha And Honda to run more tests than other brands. One of these was the private test in Barcelona, carried out before the race weekend, by the team’s test driver Cal Crutchlow. During the Jerez weekend, Fabio Quartararo talks about it, here are the words collected by Autohebdo:
“Cal Crutchlow did some testing in Barcelona last week and we will also have a day of testing here in Jerez after the race. We have high hopes for this challenging period of racing, because we need to make progress on our main objective which is to develop the bike.” – Fabio Quartararo
Precisely in this private test, Cal Crutchlow has tried some of these innovations that will be introduced in Monday’s tests. Unfortunately however, as already happened in Portugal, the test did not go in the best way. The threat of rain forces Yamaha tested everything very quickly before the track conditions worsened. The same team member who revealed the news from the tests commented on the Barcelona test to Motorsport.com:
“It was a bad test. Once again the weather was bad and gave us a bad test.” – Member of the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP team
Only one new engine was available in Barcelona, tested by Cal Crutchlow. On Monday, however, both official riders will be able to try it on theirs M1proving that the Japanese team has changed gear in the development of the bike.
Test in Jerez: the comment by Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins on Yamaha
The Jerez weekend is one of the special weekends for Fabio Quartararo . The Jerez de la Frontera circuit is the place where in 2020 he achieved the first two victories in MotoGP in an all-round podium Yamaha. Due to Covid, both the Spanish GP and the Andalusian GP were held on the Jerez circuit. The following year, 2021, he wins again aboard the Official Yamaha.
These results now seem impossible to achieve, but the Frenchman does not lose heart and continues to try new settings for his YZR-M1. He talks to Motorsport.com about the race weekend and the updates for Monday’s test:
“We have quite a few things to tryover the weekend and also on Monday, so we’ll try to do the best we can. I think the most important thing is to understand and try to find the solution to really take that step forward. We know where our “problem” is to take a step forward, but we must find the solution. Among the things that will be seen, we will have a lot of aerodynamics to try, a version that will be quite different. We will have a frame. I don’t know about the engine but there are so many things to try: we have a swingarm, we don’t even know if we can try it, the electronics which we will also try, tmany things that were tried by Cal in Barcelona. He should have tried them at Mugello but he couldn’t” – Fabio Quartararo
Also Alex Rinsduring Friday in Jerez, adds to the words of Fabio Quartararo about Monday’s tests:
“On Monday we will evaluate the innovations brought by Yamaha including aerodynamics and engine because at the moment we are struggling really hard. In some corners, like turn 8, I have to reduce the speed and this makes us waste a lot of time, especially on the exit” – Alex Rins
There are many things to test and time is no friend of the Iwata team. As “El Diablo” states, if they manage to try two or three updates it will be a major achievement. All that remains is to wait for Monday and see what he will be able to do Yamaha and what results he will bring home from the Jerez tests.
