Wales: yet another injury for Taulupe Faletau

Bad luck strikes the centurion again, who hasn’t worn the Dragoons shirt for months

Wales: yet another injury for Taulupe Faletau (Ph. Sebastiano Pessina)

There seems to be no peace for Taulupe Faletau. The expert third row of Wales and Cardiff Rugby has to deal with yet another injury and a stoppage which, from the previews, will be quite long.

Last weekend, during the 14th day of the United Rugby Championship, Faletau was away with his Cardiff team to face Ulster. Around the 30th minute the third line was forced to leave the field while holding his arm; as if that wasn’t enough, the Welsh team also suffered a comeback from the Irish, who beat them in the final minute 19-17.

Wales: yet another injury and stoppage for Taulupe Faletau

For Faletau, however, the worst news came in the following days. Tests revealed a fracture at the shoulder level, as communicated by Cardiff Rugby coach Matt Sherratt: “There is no exact recovery time given, but hopefully Taulupe [Faletau] be recovered for the start of next season.”

Coach Sherratt provided further information regarding Faletau’s injury: “This did not involve the ligaments, but a fracture was found. The good news is that surgery doesn’t seem necessary, it’s an injury that will heal on its own. Unfortunately it will take some time, his season with Cardiff ends here.”

As for his national team, Wales, Faletau’s season risks ending before it even begins. The centurion, just since he reached 100 caps, has been decimated by injuries: he already had to miss the end of the Rugby World Cup last year, he was unable to take part in the 2024 Six Nations and now in all likelihood he will also have to miss out at summer Test Matches.

Summer Nations Series which will be challenging for Warren Gatland’s Dragons: it starts on June 22nd facing the confirmed world champions South Africa, then a double challenge against Australia between July 6th and 13th, finally the match on the 19th with the Queensland Reds.
