During the media day at the Caja Magica in Madrid, the various champions present at the Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 in the Spanish capital answered journalists’ questions. Singular a statement of Aryna Sabalenka, former world no.1 and two-time Australian Open champion. After the terrible event involving her ex-partner Konstantin Koltsov, who tragically died in Miami, the Belarusian spoke again and seemed rather serene and smiling. You said you don’t watch many of your colleagues’ matches and that you prefer men’s tennis.
“A Big Three in women’s tennis? I feel like I’ve lowered the bar a bit within that hypothetical trio, this last month feels more like a Big Two (laughs). However, I am happy to be part of this group. I hope to maintain my level and that things continue to go like this. I don’t watch their matches, no: I feel that I have played enough against them and that, if I play one of them again, my coach will show me images of their matches to analyze them and prepare. I’m not someone who watches tennis too much, I prefer watching men’s tennis rather than women’s tennis, I feel like there’s more logic to it and it’s more interesting to watch.”
Words that certainly make you think, given that they were pronounced by one of the best players in the world. A consideration also for Garbine Muguruza, Spanish tennis star who recently officially retired: “What comes to mind when I think of her? Fashion, beauty… Strength, fighter… so many things. She was an incredible player, I’m happy to have played against her, even if not for long.
