Udinese-Roma on 25 April at 8pm

After convening an emergency Council, the president of the Lega Serie A confirmed April 25th as the first date to conclude the match as per the Statute. But the club doesn’t agree: “I’m taking a step backwards for the entire football system in Italy”

Now it’s official: Udinese-Roma, interrupted on 14 April in the 71st minute at 1-1 due to Ndicka’s illness, will end on Thursday 25 April from 8pm. Lega Serie A has taken into consideration the letter that the club had sent to it sent asking to postpone the injury time at the end of the match so as to be able to play against Napoli on Saturday 27th and have the same days of rest as Bayer Leverkusen, the Giallorossi’s next opponent in the Europa League semi-final, with the first leg at the Olimpico on 2 May . President Lorenzo Casini also convened an emergency League Council to discuss the case, confirming the need to respect the Statute while avoiding dangerous precedents. However, the League has allowed Roma to decide whether to play Napoli on Saturday or Sunday, which is why the table of advances and postponements of the 34th matchday will arrive tomorrow.

the press release from Rome

However, Roma did not like the decision and immediately after the date was made official they issued a highly controversial statement: “AS Roma, with its European results and four consecutive semi-finals, has contributed to the UEFA ranking and therefore to the fifth slot for the Italian teams in the next Champions League like few other clubs. Despite this, Lega Serie A President Lorenzo Casini today endorsed an unfair decision that will force Roma to face Bayer 04 Leverkusen, at a disadvantage. This represents a clear step back for the entire football system in Italy. The team, players and staff of AS Roma reaffirm their commitment to oppose this unjustified adversity and to achieve, with the support of their incredible fans, the maximum Forza Roma goals !”.

the rules of series a

The Lega Serie A regulation in article 30 paragraph 3 states that “for interrupted matches, the two clubs have the right to agree to play the continuation of the match the following day, subject to ratification of the agreement by the Lega Serie A. In case of failure to reach an agreement between the two companies or failure to ratify by the Council, the President will set the date for the continuation of the tender, to be carried out within fifteen days of the provision”. Fifteen days therefore, extendable in case of midweek commitments of one of the two teams that neither Roma nor Udinese have. A factor which has so far prevented Atalanta-Fiorentina from being played, postponed to 17 March and which – given the commitments of the two clubs in the Italian Cup and in Europe – cannot be played in any case before 22 May (if Atalanta did not reach the final of Europa League) or 27 May (if Fiorentina were to reach the Conference semi-final).
