On the evening of Christmas Eve they would have dinner with fish and seafood, including mussels. After a few hours, they all felt sick: father, mother and daughter. They went to the emergency room of the Cardarelli hospital in Campobasso, but were sent back twice. Last night the turning point: pain and colic that become unbearable and all three return to hospital in precarious conditions. Daughter and father end up in intensive care, the mother in medicine.
Death of mother and daughter
But the girl Sara Di Vita, 15 years old, and her mother, Antonella Di Ielsi, can’t make it and die, probably as a result of food poisoning. The 50-year-old woman from Pietracatella was hospitalized in serious condition.
She worked with her accountant husband, Gianni Di Vita, 55, who was previously the town’s mayor for a long time.
The transfer
The father and older sister of the fifteen-year-old who died last night in hospital in Campobasso due to suspected food poisoning together with her mother have been transferred to the Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Rome. The man had been hospitalized at Cardarelli until this afternoon precisely because he had the same symptoms as his family, while his eldest daughter never experienced any problems because, in all likelihood, she did not take part in the meal that caused the suspected intoxication. However, his transfer was arranged as a precaution.
The causes of death
The causes of death remain to be clarified. The first medical evaluations speak of a possible gastroenteritis linked to food poisoning, a hypothesis that will have to be verified by medical-legal investigations. For this reason, an autopsy was requested, deemed essential to accurately reconstruct the sequence of events.
At the moment the main hypothesis put forward by doctors at the Cardarelli hospital in Campobasso regarding the death of the 15-year-old who died yesterday evening is that of fulminant hepatitis linked to food poisoning. We learn this from medical sources. The health facility of the Molise capital has ordered further diagnostic tests to establish the causes of death. Checks are also underway on the access to the emergency room in recent days by the girl and her family.
