A 15 year old girl, Sara Di Vitadied last night at the Cardarelli hospital in Campobasso where she had been hospitalized due to a persistent illness for a few hours. After a few hours the mother also died, Antonella Di Ielsi50 years old from Pietracatella (Campobasso) also hospitalized in serious conditions. She worked with her accountant husband, Gianni Di Vita55 years old, who was in the past a long time mayor of the town. At the moment he too is hospitalized at Cardarelli but could be transferred to Rome.
Access to the emergency room
From investigative sources we learn that the members of the family, before yesterday’s hospitalization, had already gone to the Cardarelli emergency room twice and were then immediately discharged with the diagnosis of food poisoning and gastroenteritis but excluding botulinum. Another daughter, 18 years old, did not go to hospital, did not suffer symptoms but had not participated in the Christmas Eve dinner, the moment in which the intoxication may have occurred, perhaps due to the ingestion of fish or mushrooms.
The autopsy
The Campobasso prosecutor’s office ordered an autopsy on the victims’ bodies. The Flying Squad of the Molise capital, led by Marco Graziano, is investigating the incident. In recent hours, the agents have acquired the medical records and are carrying out a series of checks in the hospital, also listening to the people informed of the facts.
“We are shocked, it is a tragedy that leaves us speechless”, says the mayor of Pietracatella Antonio Tommasone. “The country is in disbelief in the face of such a tragedy, I express my condolences – he concludes – and that of the entire community to the family”. The Municipality has also decided to cancel all scheduled Christmas events.
