The study published last June 10 in the journal JAMA Network Open it’s clear enough. Generations born in the 1960s and 1970s may be more likely to develop cancer during their adult lives than previous generations, although the situation is not as serious as it seems.
To develop this opinion, which sees thehe Boomer generation much healthier today than their elderly counterparts in coming decades, scientists have analyzed the medical records of 3.8 million people in the United States, who had been diagnosed with multiple types of cancer over the past thirty years.
They then used this data for tracking cancer onset age curves in the various decades, which are an intelligent tool to visualize at what age disease diagnoses increase for the various generational groups.
In this way it is possible to predict at what age the various types of cancer within the population develop most, also determining the future growth trajectory.
By carrying out cross-calculations, doctors were thus able to say what the trend will be in the coming years, clarifying that those born between 1965 and 1980 – the so-called generation X – they will be more affected by tumors compared to the previous generation.
This study, however, was not able to estimate cancer rates for subsequent generations, as the Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996. However, other studies have already confirmed that young people are starting to have other characteristics, which worry experts.
At the same time, cancer research is making giant strides, with the introduction of new drugs that manage to limit the risk of getting sick and the evolution of treatments. For this reason, many scientists believe that the future scenario will not be as dark as it might seem, analyzing just some data.
