Giorgia Meloni and the billion-dollar migrant centers for the “poor souls” in Albania: «But it won’t be Guantanamo»

Giorgia Meloni’s electoral hotspot for the “poor souls” in Albania will cost even more than 800 million. The total bill will most likely come to a billion. Because while the Prime Minister celebrates the agreement with Edi Rama, it is the expenses for the ships that will increase costs. And the Albanian prime minister, who had blamed Italy for the alleged delays, today says that the two CPRs to be opened in Gadjer and Shengjn “are not Guantanamo”. And he blasts the Italian press after the denied interview with Republic and the services dedicated to him by Reports. “Rivers of mud have been poured on my country just because of the agreement,” says Rama. That on the new date of August 1st as the opening day of the centers he refuses the question on the electoral advert: «Ask Meloni, not me».

«Poor things? If it’s”

Yesterday the Prime Minister responded with an ironic «poor things? See” to the criticisms of Riccardo Magi of +Europa, protagonist of a video with raid and associated response from the Albanian police. After the signing of the protocol last November, operations slowed down. For “problems related to the nature of the land that we had not foreseen”, said Meloni. Which speaks of 136 million in total costs for the state coffers. That is, approximately 683 million euros, also counting the rental of ships. According to Meloni, it would be possible to accommodate 5,500 people in the centres. While the capacity of Gjader does not exceed a thousand units and the risk that each guest will remain there for 18 months between appeals and counter-appeals makes all the accounts go wrong. But it is the cost point that is the most important. And that of the numbers that don’t add up anyway. Firstly because 138 thousand euros per day will be paid for travel by Italian staff alone

A billion dollar CPR

And secondly, explain today Republic, precisely because the numbers don’t add up. The first 653 million allocated are 134 million per year, which is the figure that Meloni more or less cites. But on 15 April in the Pnrr decree the government allocated another 65 million for the construction of the centers by the Ministry of Defence. And so we have already reached 718. Then there is the contract for the management of services in the two centres, awarded to Medihospes by the prefecture: 134 million euros in five years. Finally there is the private ship to transfer migrants from the Mediterranean to Albania. Four trips a month for 800 migrants in total will cause the Italian state to spend another 13.5 million. But for only three months. If you multiply this figure by the three-year duration of the agreement, the total costs reach the billion mark.

Edi Rama

Meanwhile, Rama defends the agreement with Meloni. In an interview with The print makes it known that it has said no to similar requests from other countries. And that he accepted that of Italy due to the special relationship that binds the two countries: «Millennia of common history and the sea bind us. Talking about Guantanamo is like spitting in the face of the victims of that hell. While there is no doubt that there are potential risks. The plan took these critical issues into account, which is why we limited the number of migrants to three thousand.” And finally: «Albania is linked to Italy, I to Meloni far beyond the right and the left. She was valid for all Italian prime ministers. The European Parliament is dressed like two blankets, and I don’t think it will change. But if it seems to you that I support Meloni’s right-wing politics, then what do you say about Scholz, who expressed the same satisfaction with the agreement with Italy? These concepts of left and right are limiting for our complex world.”
