Rome, 30 December 2025 – The Chamber of Deputies today definitively approved the Budget Law for 2026. «The effort that has been made is concentrated on medium-low incomes»declared the Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, after the Assembly’s green light to the Budget Law, a measure worth around 22 billion euros which – underlined the minister – provides for interventions aimed at supporting the purchasing power of workers and families.
«The fundamental point of this maneuver is that in fact we have de-taxed contractual increases and closed all public contracts that have been stagnant for years»said Giorgetti, highlighting how this translates into «concrete increases in wages and salaries of employees». A measure, the minister recalled, «which both the unions and the employers asked us to do»and what it represents “a very important signal” thanks to the preferential taxation of contractual increases and productivity wages.
On the social security front, Giorgetti clarified that “the government’s intervention reduced the increase in the retirement age by two months in 2027 because it would automatically have increased by three months” as required by current legislation. During 2026 – he added – “if things continue to go well in public finances, we will also try to reduce that extra month that would start in 2027”.
The minister also reiterated that the maneuver does not take away resources from social spending to finance defense. «We have not removed a euro from social spending to allocate it to spending on weapons»he explained, specifying that any evaluation on the topic will be addressed when and if Italy emerges from the infringement procedure, with the aim of «do not touch in any way the expenses for health, school and education».
Finally, Giorgetti expressed his support for the reform of the accounting law, hoping for a rapid parliamentary process. «It is right that the reform is parliamentary and that Parliament finds a way to approve it as quickly as possible»per «streamline the procedures and make possible a real debate on the essential issues of the budget law».
