Second Giuseppe Conte “the conditions are being created for a new season of Tangentolopoli throughout the national territory.” How does the government react to this alarm? “The majority weakens the fight against crimes of White collars“, says the leader of the 5 Star Movement, speaking in Palermo at the congress of the National Association of Magistrates. An intervention that comes in the days following the arrest of Giovanni Totithe governor of Liguria accused of corruption. “Today – said Conte – we are witnessing one rampant contamination between business and politics, from North to South. The conditions are being created, as I also said, for a new Tangentopoli. Politics must do everything to prevent. It must take measures to clean up its own internal affairs, within the parties, and avoid this degeneration. And don’t let it be just the judicial investigations, completely legitimate and dutiful, to dictate the rules and occupy the field. As a politician we must ensure that we have a jolt of dignity. The judiciary must necessarily take its course, but it must not be the judiciary alone that is subsequently concerned with these situations.”

During his speech the former prime minister harshly criticized the government’s reforms Giorgia Meloni: from those relating to justice to constitutional ones, also passing through the separation of the careers of magistrates. “Our position on this is very clear: us we do not believe that the Italian model should be revised. It is a model that is proving to be virtuous. Career transitions are insignificant,” said the leader of the 5 Star Movement, claiming that “the direction” followed by the government is that of the “prosecuting magistrate subject to political power”. Regarding justice reform, Conte outlined “a process of centralization and redistribution of powers in a top-down sense. This plan will hardly be completed with an independent judiciary. Hence the prospect of the separation of careers and the reform of the CSM, the revision of the mandatory nature of criminal law. They are all corollaries of one same reform plan. It is clear that the authoritarian turn has similarities with the democratic rebirth project of the P2″. A passage that relaunches the intervention of Roberto Scarpinato, former attorney general of Palermo and senator of the 5 Star Movement. “This congress – continued Conte – takes place at a historic crossroads for our country. The government, which is supported by parties with different visionshas found a point of balance: the pactum sceleris. A compromise of power to guarantee permanence in government. Each party has identified a pillar of Constitution to be rewritten, with the result of upset the foundations themselves of our constitutional architecture. It is a compromise of power that we must denounce: it is irresponsible adventurism.” And again, added the former prime minister, “the overall framework of these reforms will place us in an area of post authoritarian democracies. A sistem lacking balance, with checks and balances reduced to a minimum. And this also applies to the judiciary.”

And regarding the role of the robes, Conte addressed the audience of the judiciary union in these terms: “There is a political impact due to your decisions. But it must be addressed seriously. At this moment in front of the perverse connections between politics and business, there is an unseemly reaction, a corporate reaction, which wants to delegitimize your action. The usual ministers denounce the ‘clockwork justice“. The leader of the 5 stars then recalled the words of the Keeper of the Seals on the Genoa investigation: “Nordio manages to censor an ongoing investigation”, he added. “This majority – continued the former prime minister – is offering a terrible show, and politics as a whole. There is no desire to question what the measures could be to counteract this permeability to corruption chains. The message of political power is: let us continue our action, let us work.” Then he closed his speech with an appeal: “Attacks on the judiciary must be rejected.”
