The British government has ruled out any post-Brexit with the EU making it easier for young British people to live, study and work in the European Union, a government spokesperson said. This week the European Commission invited the 27 EU countries to start negotiations on a ‘youth mobility programme’ for British citizens aged between 18 and 30. But the UK, which has individual youth mobility programs with 13 countries, said it prefer bilateral agreements with individual countries compared to an agreement at European level.

The motivations
«We will not introduce a European-wide youth mobility programme: free movement within the EU has been interrupted and there are no plans to introduce it,” a government spokesperson said. The UK is open to agreeing youth mobility programs with its ‘international partners’, including individual EU member states. The opposition Labor Party has also ruled out the possibility of a Europe-wide programme, saying it will seek to improve the UK’s working relationship with the EU within its red lines: “no return to the single market, customs union or free movement.”
Britain left the European student exchange program Erasmus after Brexit, but the Commission has said that, should the UK wish to rejoin, it remains “open” to the idea.
