In the beginning there was the summer hit, it used to be one, two at most, and it lasted all summer, but in the last few years it has become a real business. An admittedly planned commercial operation in which unlikely feats and some truly successful ones were born. Dominating the 2023 charts were The Kolors who tried to repeat this year with “Karma”, a hit immediately grabbed by a well-known ice cream brand for their advertising and which for the fourth consecutive week is the most listened to song in radio. In the last seven days it was broadcast by 120 stations (out of 150) and had a total of 2,450 airings.

If last year the first summer sounds started in May, this year everything has been brought forward even further. While the thermometer in Italy was showing very cold temperatures at the end of March, “Come un Tuono” by Rose Villain exploded in a duet with Guè (the rapper is currently also in rotation with “Notte bianca” together with Fred De Palma). From then on it was a crescendo with the great women protagonists of a summer full of dancing: Elodie, Emma, Annalisa, BigMama just to name a few. To date, “Sesso e Samba” by Tony Effe and Gaia has hit the ground running, last week it was certified Gold, less than a month after its release, and is continuing to grow dramatically (#1 in the Spotify charts , Apple Music and Amazon Music, more than 30 million streams and over 7.5 million views of the video clip on YouTube). For now, it’s impossible to get “Malavita” by Coma Cose out of your head, released in April and the surprise of this special ranking.
Among the “strange” but decidedly successful feats we find Annalisa and Tananai, in “Storie brevi”, or Alessandra Amoroso and BigMama with “Mezzorotta”. Producer Jvli chose Emma and Olli for his artistic debut with “I want you”. Elodie plays solo, however, with “Black Nirvana”, like Mara Sattei with “Solo guai” and Angelina Mango with “Melodrama”. More subdued, so to speak, “Sexy Shop” by Fedez paired with Emis Killa which is currently in 5th place in the Top 50 Italy on Spotify. Among the summer debuts worth mentioning are Ghali with “Paprika”, and Anna, the most listened to female artist in Italy on Spotify, who sings “30°C” for holidays in rhyme to the sea.
For the more nostalgic, Bnkr44 arrives with the super-hit “Ma che idea” with Pino D’Angiò and “Estate 80”. Ricchi e Poveri also try, returning after Sanremo to a new life with “Aria”. As for the international front, scrolling through the Spotify chart of the hits of the month, Pharrell Williams immediately catches your eye with “Double Life”, which will be the soundtrack of the upcoming “Despicable Me 4”. The song was released on June 14th and is already in the top 10, it’s certainly not “Happy” but it could grow. Return in style for Eminem with “Houdini”, the first extract from his 12th studio album “The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace)”.
Who will make you dance will be Billie Eilish with “Lunch”, as well as “Shut Up And Dance” by Sophie and the Giants. For the real catchphrases, the ones that can be shouted at the top of one’s lungs even without perfectly knowing the text and the language, we will have to wait a little longer, or at least until the next “bomb” arrives from the Latin countries, perhaps by Enrique Iglesias who at the moment he stopped at “La botella” (published last April). Holding the flag high for now is J Balvin who released “Polvo de tu vida” with his great friend Chencho Corleone. However, no one is safe and only in September will we find out who has conquered the Italian summer.
