At least 33 Ethiopian migrants, including an eight-year-old boy, have died after their boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti. They were among 77 people who tried to cross the Red Sea from Yemen to Ethiopia. We talk about it with Tanja Pacifico, head of mission of the international organization for migration in Djibouti. | The British Parliament has approved the “emergency” bill on Rwanda wanted by Rishi Sunak to start the sending of migrants arriving on British soil to the African country. Sunak said the first flight would take off in 10-12 weeks and that regular journeys would be made over the summer “until the boats are stopped” across the Channel. However, the controversial legislation is set to run into legal challenges that could still delay flights. We talk about it with Daniele Fisichella, freelance journalist. | German police on Monday arrested an Alternative for Germany (AfD) collaborator who works in the European Parliament on charges of spying for China. Jian G., as the German authorities identified him, works for MEP Maximilian Krah, leading candidate of the far-right German party AfD in the European Parliament elections in June. German authorities also arrested three people suspected of providing information on military technology to Chinese intelligence services. The Chinese embassy in Berlin denied the allegations, urging Germany “to stop using the espionage accusation to politically manipulate China’s image.” In mid-December, the newspapers Der Spiegel, Financial Times and Le Monde published hundreds of messages exchanged by a Chinese intelligence agent known as Daniel Woo and one of his European contacts, the former Belgian MP Frank Creyelman of the Flemish party of far right Vlaams Belang (VB). Daniel Woo, according to newspaper reports, was tasked with managing anti-EU influence operations. We talk about it with Giulia Pompili, foreign editorial journalist of Il Foglio, co-author of Bambù, a podcast that recounts the last 25 years of Asia (Chora media), and author of Beautiful to Die for. The dark side of K-pop (Rizzoli, 2023). Giulia De Luca at the microphones.
