The exes are back among us child prodigy of Polish black metal, even if now a label of only comparisons would be reductive to say the least for Blaze Of Perdition. If, in reference to previous records, we made the easiest ones with their compatriots Kriegsmaschine and Mgła, also to underline their progressive leading role in this scene, on “Upharsin” the band from Lublin further broadens their musical horizons , without distorting them.
With an eye (or an ear, for sensorial precision) to certain things of Watain, at least in terms of vision, this time Blaze of Perdition bring their wildest and most epic side to the foreground, conveying a sense of primordial blasphemy which – without wanting to be nostalgic – too often we no longer find in many black metal releases. Sonneillon’s muddy singing remains an element that may be decisive for some people’s taste, but absolutely spot-on for increasing the otherworldly, rotten and malignant atmosphere. However, it is not precisely a matter of pure repetition of old stylistic features to make the most retrograde souls gloat: in the chaotic riffs and guitar arpeggios that punctuate the album the evident attention to new, or now less new, instances emerges; after all, they often emerged with class from their native Poland. To confirm the sensation of small but precious innovations, we mention the fascinating sense of “call to arms” with the strong folk overtones of “Przez Rany”, also embellished with a dissonant solo. And then the peak of the album, which is reached on “Młot, Miecz I Bat”, wisely placed at the conclusion; a piece made of perfectly blended contrasts, obsessiveness and dissonances that intersect wonderfully, confirming the expressive urgency and intensity of these four nihilists – always speaking of oxymorons.
In short, after about twenty years of a very respectable career, the Polish band proves to be a very solid reality in the genre, from which it is difficult to ask for further confirmation.
