Sigourney Weaver offered a few more details on how that soulful scene between Kiri and Spider in Avatar: Fire and Ash was filmed.

The return of Avatar: Fire and Ash brought attention once again to the new generation of protagonists. Although Jake Sully he is still on the front line in the battle against Quaritch and the invading humans, his children also play a key role in the plot. Specifically, Left she has unique abilities and is very close to Spiderwho he affectionately calls the monkey-boy. Son of the real Quaritch, Spider is fond of the Sullys who raised him as their son and is very close to Kiri, with whom at a certain point he experiences an intimate and romantic moment. To tell how that scene was shot was Sigourney Weaver.

Avatar: Fire and Ash, Sigourney Weaver explains how the kiss scene between Kiri and Spider was created

Involved since the first Avatar, Sigourney Weaver initially played the doctor Grace Augustineafter which from Avatar: The Way of Water she played Grace’s daughter, Left. In Avatar: Fire and Ash, Kiri is now a teenager and has formed a deep bond with Spider, with whom she shared an intimate and special moment. Sigourney Weaver revealed how that scene was filmed: at one point Kiri tells Spider that he is “perfect the way he is” and shortly after they share a kiss. That scene was filmed a while ago and Sigourney Weaver told The Hollywood Reporter to have filmed the kiss with an older stuntman. The actress, 76, revealed:

That scene where I say, ‘You’re perfect just the way you are,’ we had to be very delicate because it included a kiss. Obviously I wouldn’t have kissed Jack Champion, who was 14 or 15 at the time, in real life. We asked Jack to pick someone I could kiss and he did. Then I guess, when I wasn’t there, they chose someone appropriate for Jack. That concern about all of this, which is completely legitimate, was ongoing. And I’m glad the scene survived, because when I saw it I believed it. It’s so genuine between the two of them and any concerns about Jake’s real age and my real age shouldn’t have had anything to do with that moment.

The actress was asked if she had filmed any other scenes with Jack Champion and confirmed that only the one with the kiss was not filmed together. “Yes, it was just that moment. I thought Jack was just amazing in the movie. It’s a really interesting role. It’s also the role that Jim Cameron filled in after writing the second, third, and fourth. He had told me about this human boy before he started writing it, and I think he tried to at some point. It is the driving force of the whole film, that incredible tension in a mixed-race family in which the parents have completely opposite feelings and the children don’t have the same feelings. I thought it would resonate well in our complicated world. It was like a little vacation every time we shot a scene, because we had fun. It was like taking a break for me, because she’s so happy and delirious, she really enjoys her own company. I don’t know how tall I should be, maybe 193cm, while he is maybe 173cm tall, so I’m taller and it shows well in the film. As a tall woman myself, height doesn’t matter at all. I love that they’re so different, it’s perfect.”
