Kevin Costner’s westerns from worst to best!

Despite the doubts surrounding Horizon: An American Saga, the film with Kevin Costner continues to be at the center of discussions among film enthusiasts.

After the great success of Yellowstone, Costner’s career has received a further positive boost. For this reason, we at - have created this special dedicated to the career of the American actor, offering you a small compendium of some of his most iconic western films, from worst to best.

Wyatt Earp (1994)

Directed by Lawrence Kasdan, the film is a biopic dedicated to the figure of the eponymous American sheriff and gunslinger. The film follows his exploits from childhood to adulthood when, after taking over the leadership of Tombstone County, he decides to declare war on gangs of criminals. It is certainly a very interesting film, whose production history intersects with that of another film centered on the same figure, Tombstone, which was more appreciated for a more pressing pace and more intense action scenes.

Horizon: An American Saga – Parte 1 (2024)

Let’s then move on to Costner’s latest work, Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1. Directed by the same actor, who is certainly sparing no expense in the making of his creation, Horizon is a very long film – around 3 hours of vision throughout – which focuses on American expansionism before and after the Civil War. The film does not shine excessively due to the contribution of its cast and requires, among other things, the vision of the other chapters to have an overall vision.

Let him go (2020)

Let him go, directed by Thomas Bezucha, is certainly one of the American actor’s most underrated films. The film follows the story of a retired sheriff on a mission to recover his nephew. Focusing heavily on the acting skills of the protagonists and on a series of twists, this western is the perfect film for those looking for a not too busy viewing on a quiet autumn afternoon.

Silverado (1985)

A film strongly based on the reversal of roles, Silverado shows us the exploits of four outlaws – who will prove particularly heroic – committed to revealing the misdeeds of the corrupt sheriff of Silverado, guilty of having caused a massacre. The film, which could count on a very rich cast, is among the best of its genre for the period of release, and is still counted today as one of the best western productions in which Costner took part.

Open Range (2003)

Let’s move on to Open Range. Another highly underrated western in Costner’s filmography, the film follows a former gunslinger who rallies some allies to defend himself from a corrupt officer. The plot of the film is very simple, but perhaps it is precisely the essential nature of the storytelling that gives strength to this production, whose cast also includes Michael Gambon (Dumbledore in Harry Potter) and Robert Duvall.

Dances with Wolves (1990)

Directed by Kevin Costner himself, and winner of 7 Oscars, Dances with Wolves tells the story of a Union general who, after approaching the Lakota Sioux tribe, will give a new meaning to his existence, breaking down several barriers related to prejudice and going against his own comrades. It is certainly a very appreciated and touching film, considered a true classic of its genre.

They are GODZILLA AND KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE (DS) It is one of the best sellers today.
