The title recalls Italy, but in reality the setting is very far from our country. In fact, the Mexican director takes direct inspiration from some events of his childhood to organize the plot of his film, using black and white and at the same time describing the social context of Mexico City between the Sixties and Seventies, focusing in particular on about the neighborhood that gives the film its title. By shooting a film about the past with the most modern digital technology and the most sophisticated sound design, Cuarón creates a blend of yesterday and today capable of achieving technical miracles.
A film unanimously judged to be a true masterpiece which, despite being in the original language and without a stellar cast, managed to hit the mark to remain in the history of cinematography of all time. And for this reason, it represents a good idea for Netflix subscribers who love intense and introspective stories, which mix drama and feelings, memories, nostalgia and truth.
There plot tells of a turbulent year in the life of a bourgeois family through the events of the maid Cleo and her collaborator Adela, both of Mixtec descent. We are in the Roma neighborhood in Mexico City, in a family led by Sofia, mother of four children, and also made up of her husband and grandmother.
Meanwhile, Cleo faces devastating news that risks distracting her from taking care of Sofia’s children, who she loves as if they were her own.
