2012
We almost didn’t include it in our ranking of the films with the most spectacular special effects, so here it is again in another respectable selection. 2012 is a film that revolves around the very famous prophecy according to which, in 2012, the world should have ended due to an unparalleled climate disaster. Luckily, things didn’t go as they did in this spectacular representation of an alternative reality. The film, acclaimed by critics, is today a high exponent of the action category and, inevitably, we could not avoid including it in this selection.
Rampage – Animal Fury
If you are still thirsty for giant monsters and watching Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire didn’t fully satisfy you, then you can make up for it with Rampage. Based on the 80s video game of the same name produced by Midway Games, the film puts a tireless Dwayne The Rock Johnson at the center of the events in the role of a primatologist, who finds himself entangled in a story with “gargantuan” connotations.
Pacific Rim
Prominent exponent of the cinema in which i kaiju they act as masters, Pacific Rim is a film that we will never tire of recommending. With a brilliant Guillermo del Toro as director and, among the protagonists, a very inspired Idris Elba, the film grossed an impressive 411 million dollars worldwide, establishing itself as a huge success with audiences and critics in 2013. The plot sees humans pitted against gigantic alien monster gods who threaten to destroy the world. To counter them, nations around the globe unite to create the Jaeger project: the construction of giant robots controlled by their pilots.
Jurassic World
The Jurassic Park franchise returns to life with the reboot/sequel to the series released in 2015, over 14 years after the conclusion of the events of Jurassic Park III. A conscious use of fan service, mixed with an overall (still) sensible plot, they made this film an incredible success, with revenues that to date exceed 1.6 billion dollars worldwide. The CGI behind the modeling of the dinosaurs, including the scary Indominus Rex, make this film a true feast for the eyes.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Luc Besson returns to directing with a little pearl of science fiction cinema that went unnoticed. Based on the graphic novel by Pierre Christin, the film is set in the year 2740. A future in which the human race has conquered part of the cosmos thanks to the very advanced technology it possesses. Protagonists Valerian and Laurelin, played by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevigne. A riot of spectacular images, space travel, alien races and heart-pounding action make this film a leading exponent of the genre.
