2023 was not a good year for the superhero movies, most of which earned negative reviews and poor box office results. One of the most shocking flops, however, was that of The Marvels.

Captain Marvel earned over $1 billion in 2019 and the sequel has seen Carol Danvers paired with Monica Rambeau Of WandaVision and the main character of Ms. Marvel. Now, Deadline has crunched the numbers and revealed that the $206.1 million global gross of The Marvels they were worse than anyone thought.

According to insiders, on balance the film recorded a net loss of 237 million dollars. It is therefore not surprising that Disney’s CEO Bob Iger has stated that Marvel Studios will begin to abandon the development of unnecessary sequels. As for the future of these characters, it’s hard to say.

Monica will clearly be part of a future multiversal story after landing in the same reality as the X-Menwhile it is said that a variant of Ms. Marvel will be the protagonist of Marvel Zombies. With regard to Captain Marvelhis story will surely continue in the next Avengers films.

Of course, if 2023 was bad for the Marvel Studiosthe DCEU fared even worse. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Blue Beetle, Aquaman: Lost Kingdom and The Flash they significantly underperformed, and while some fared better than others, it was still a disappointing end to the franchise.

The latter has been defined “the greatest superhero movie ever made“, but ultimately reported a net loss of $155 million. For comparison, she has earned $271.3 million worldwide.

However, before we get too caught up in the talk of superhero fatigue, it’s worth remembering that the genre is still capable of making a lot of money. Indeed, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is listed as one of the most successful films of 2023, with a profit of $124 million.

I think there’s been a lot of talk about it and people haven’t seen it“Teyonah Parris recently said about the difficulties of The Marvels. “So it’s frustrating when people comment on things they haven’t actually experienced.” He added: “There are many people who have put a lot of their time, spirit and talent into carrying this project forward“.

I hope people give it a fair try, seeing it or trying it. If you don’t like the first 10 or 15 minutes, that’s okay. Your time is precious. But we make these films so that they can be an escape from the real world into a moment of lightness, joy and imagination“.

You don’t have to like something, but give it a chance by seeing it and forming your own opinion“, continues Parris. “And if you have, then that’s right. That’s how you feel, and I can’t take that away from you“.
