The development of Severus Snape was probably JK Rowling’s true stroke of genius: the writer of Harry Potter managed to make the Potions professor one of the deepest and most complex characters in the wizard saga, then giving Alan Rickman the opportunity to best characterize him on the big screen.
As already explained by Rowling herself in the past, the writer (recently attacked by Daniel Radcliffe for her positions on trans women) in fact granted only Rickman the privilege of knowing the greatest secret of his character: the love felt for Harry’s mother, Lily Potter.
“He called me and said, ‘Look, I’m going crazy here. I really need to understand where Snape is going with this. Am I really just a bad guy?’ She was the only person I told: ‘You’re in love with Harry’s mother‘. I explained everything to him: ‘You are an undercover agent. But it’s true that you despise Harry. You just can’t get over your contempt for this boy who looks so much like your great enemy.’ So I revealed everything to Alan Rickman long before it was seen on the big screen” were Rowling’s words. What can I say? An absolutely deserved privilege for an actor who contributed decisively to making Severus Snape an unforgettable character.
