Is Civil War aiming for a historic second consecutive first place? Horror Abigail risks

While we wonder if Alex Garland’s next film Warfare will be a spin-off of Civil War, the most recent effort from the author of Annihilation and Ex Machina is struggling at the box office to obtain a historic second consecutive first place in the best rankings weekend receipts.

Contrary to what was anticipated by the first box office analyzes of the new weekend of April 2024, in fact, the new data would now seem to indicate that Civil War will remain at the top of the charts also in its second weekend of programming: it would be a doubly historic result for Alex Garland’s film, which last week had already become the first A24 film to debut in first place in the rankings and which consequently he would also become the first to do it ‘back-to-back’that is, remaining at the top of the box office for two consecutive weekends.

The new estimates in fact speak of a gross of another 11 million dollars for Civil Warwhich would thus bring its domestic total to over 44 million: the same numbers that analysts had predicted in recent days, with the difference however that the new Universal horror Abigail, which was expected to debut around $15 million, slowed down sharply in box office on Friday, April 19 and is now expected to wrap up its first domestic weekend around $10 million. The numbers for both films could change, of course, but this reversal now favors Civil Warvery close to a historic record for the A24.

The USA top5 will be completed by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from Warner Bros. and Legendary, which remains a force to be reckoned with in its fourth weekend and is expected to land in third place with more than $9 million (for a total of $170 million domestically), from The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Guy Ritchie in fourth place with an opening of around 8.8 million dollars and finally by the anime Spy × Family Code: White, in fifth place with 4.5 million.
