Last weekend was disappointing, but this last one (also due to the good weather and heat) was even worse, in what risks becoming a really bad April.
This week it brought in a total taking of 3,671,294 euros, compared to 7,935,104 euros in 2023 (-53.6%), when it still dominated, in its second weekend, Super Mario Bros. – The Movie with 3,888,766 euros, also helped by the good debut of The Pope’s exorcist (1,088,047 euros).
The distance with 2019 is even more evident, when 9,556,515 euros were collected, thanks to the very strong debut of After (3,317,549 euros) and the third weekend of Dumbo (1,390,441 euros). Not as strong (but still much better than the one in 2024) was the similar weekend in 2018, which ended with 6,376,704 euros, led by Rampage – Animal fury with 1,268,142 euros.
And let’s get to the current films. If there is one thing clear in the result (and first place) of Ghostbusters – Glacial Menace, is that it is certainly not a front-loaded blockbuster. In fact, on Thursday it opened with 107,156 euros, while the total result for this weekend was 881,131 euros and an average of 2,049 euros in 430 cinemas, therefore with a normal multiplier and without giving the impression that there was a significant number of fans who wanted to see it from day one.
The previous film, Ghostbusters: Legacy, despite having been released in a complicated period such as November 2021, had opened the first weekend with 1,041,866 euros, and then reached a total of 2,468,804 euros. So, I’d say you can aim for a couple of million for this new chapter.
What to say instead of A world apart? After the fantastic performance of the previous weekend, when it lost only 27%, in this case the decline is more evident (-52%), with a result of 633,097 euros and an average of 1,034, with a total of 5,440,745 euros . But perhaps it wasn’t even reasonable to expect him to continue at that pace. In any case, during this week it will beat the figure of It happens in the best families (around 5.7M) to become the highest Italian grosser of 2024. And, at this point, it is normal to think that it will even exceed 6 million, beating the figure of The eight mountainsand becoming the third highest Italian grosser since March 2020, after There’s Still Tomorrow and The Big Day.
In third place, Kung Fu Panda 4which obtains another 426,561 euros (average of 1,205, second in the top ten) and becomes the first film of 2024 to exceed the 10 million threshold in Italy (Dune – Part 2 is about to succeed, at the moment it is at 9,967,991 euros), to be precise with 10,214,355 euros. In short, in the end, as we said last week, it will close around 11 million. This means that, in the last four years, only two animation titles have done better: Super Mario Bros. – The Movie (20.4M) e Minions 2 – How Gru becomes very evil (14.7M).
Likewise, the assumption that had been made about Godzilla and Kong – The New Empirei.e. ending its run around 4 million, turns out to be correct, given that the film is currently at 3,629,730 euros, with another 266,165 euros arriving over the weekend and an average of 941.
And we come to the other new releases, which certainly did not inspire enthusiasm, apart from the decent results of Suga – Agust D Tour D-Day (on the Korean member of BTS), which also include the third best average copy in the top ten with 1,047 euros. This concert thus achieved 199,016 euros in five days, thanks to 153 cinemas.
Lower averages for everyone else. Glory! it is seventh with 147,332 euros and an average of 556 euros in 265 cinemas; And the party continues! ninth with 99,315 euros and an average of 842 in 118 cinemas; Flaminia tenth with 78,220 euros and an average of 383 in 204 cinemas. The averages are even lower Coincidences of love (206 euros, with grosses of 53,945 euros in 262 cinemas) and Tito and Vinni – At full speed (176 euros, it obtained 50,550 euros in 287 cinemas), just outside the top ten, while it is confirmed that the idea of bringing Pixar cartoons present on Disney+ into theaters for years does not work, given that Soul it obtained 30,790 euros and an average of 145 in 212 cinemas.
As for the other films in production and which are present in the top ten, Omen – The origin of the omen is fifth with 209,359 euros and an average of 770, for a total so far of 699,464 euros (it will close decidedly far from the results of the previous Omen – The omenwhich had reached 1,647,905 euros), while Zamora it is eighth with 134,918 euros and an average of 457 euros, reaching a total of 433,715 euros. It should be noted that these two titles have the least declines (-43% and -40% respectively) among the films already released for some time and present in the top ten.
