Civil Warthe new film by Alex Garland (WATCH THE TRAILER) takes place in a not-too-distant future, in which a journalist (Kirsten Dunst) travels across the United States during the second American Civil War. In an interview with THRthe director explained why Texas and California, states with often divergent political positions in reality, decide to become allies in the film.

Here are his words:

The decision is partly due to the idea of circumventing a kind of reflexive and polarizing position that people might fall into. But the main aspect concerns the way in which the President [interpretato da Nick Offerman] is presented and what can be deduced from it. So here two states that have a political position realize: “Our difference politically is less important than that“. And if you can’t conceive of that, you’re saying that your polarized political position would be more important than a fascist president. Which, put in these terms, seems crazy to me. That’s a crazy position to hold. It’s kind of an indirect comment and I think the film works that way in general. It doesn’t explain these things, but it doesn’t avoid them either.

Offerman adds that the collaboration between the two states – which in the film form the Western Forces – “has a few purposes, one of which is to immediately say, ‘This shouldn’t represent the world as it is.’ But I think it also serves to say that, the way the world works nowadays, anything is possible and very quickly too“.

Garland, who first wrote the film’s story in 2020, then reflects on how to release it now, about six months before the US presidential election, “it’s really strange, just for the sense of déjà vu“:

I think the film is not just about this country, but about the strange state we’re in because of division and polarization and extremism, the things that come from populism. At the time I wrote it, I don’t think I imagined it would take four years to get to this point, but even if it had taken four years, I never thought things would be so similar.

Civil War will be released in Italian cinemas on April 18th. Also starring Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Cailee Spaeny.
