A stroke of luckfiftieth film directed by Woody Allen, will it also be the last of the great New York director? The person concerned had already discussed the possibility last September (here are his words) and now he’s back on the topic in a recent interview with Airmail.
Here are his words:
I’m undecided about my retirement. I don’t want to end up raising money for a movie. I find it irritating. But if someone came to me and told me that they wanted to support my film, then I would seriously consider it. I probably wouldn’t have the willpower to say no, because I have so many ideas.
A stroke of luck arrived in US theaters in limited distribution on April 5th and after just a week it is already available for purchase digitally. A strategy Allen doesn’t like:
I don’t care if I get distributed here or not. Once I made it [a fare un film]I don’t follow him anymore. Distribution is no longer what it used to be. Now the distribution is two weeks in a cinema… and then that’s it. Me and Annie [uscito nel 1977] ran in New York theaters for just over a year. He would stay in a cinema for six, seven months, then someone would take him back and he would stay around for a few more months. The entire industry has changed, and not in a glamorous way. All the romanticism of cinema has disappeared.
During the interview, the filmmaker also criticized those colleagues who “they love the whole business of making films, choosing costumes and working with actors“, specifying that he is not among them.
