Venice, 19 July 2023 – The President of the Veneto Region Luca Zaia has signed the declaration of a Regional State of Emergency following the very severe bad weather that hit the Veneto Dolomites area, causing considerable damage.
Zaia continues to keep in touch with the Mayors of the affected areas and with the teams who are intervening, while the activity for collecting reports of the damage is underway.
The picture, at the moment, is the following: following the rapid transit of a storm line, the areas of Comelico, Cadore and upper Agordino were strongly affected by strong winds and hail. Wind speed values were measured with gusts of 129 km/h at Cortina d’Ampezzo and greater than 140 km/h at high altitudes.
An initial survey shows that over thirty buildings suffered damage due to strong winds: of these, about fifteen had their roofs unroofed. In Santo Stefano di Cadore, about ten people were evacuated due to damage to the roofs.
Many trees have fallen to the ground, particularly in the eastern area, affecting state, regional, provincial and local roads (throughout the night it was necessary to close the SP 6 of Danta di Cadore due to the fallen trees – reopened shortly before 8:00). The crashed trees damaged numerous vehicles (quantification is underway) without causing any injuries, fortunately.
As a result of the storms there were blackouts of electricity and telecommunications in some areas, but at present it seems that functionality has been restored.
Over 100 interventions by permanent and voluntary firefighters, by teams of civil protection volunteers and by operators of road, electricity and telecommunications infrastructures, of Veneto Strade, in addition to municipal employees.
