The Power of Holy Water: Here’s How We Can Make Good Use of It

Do we know how to use Holy Water? Or do we also fall into the superstitious temptation of using it only when we “need it”? For this reason, let’s try to clarify some points.

Holy water is present in churches, we also have it at home. But what is it for? And is the devil afraid of it?

Along with holy oil and salt, water is the third most common and important sacramental we know. It is also the one most used, even during certain liturgical celebrations, to sprinkle the faithful or bless sacred objects, houses and more. We Catholics, however, we often do not know the true value, importance and meaning of holy water.

It brings countless benefits to the body and spirit, frees from various dangers, can heal from illnesses and, above all, scares the devil. We said that holy water (before the Covid era) is present in the holy water fonts at the entrance of all our parishes: when you enter, one “greets” with the sign of the Cross, wetting one’s hand in holy water.

The Power of Holy Water

But how is this Sacramental actually used? Its most important effect is to drive away the devil who “goes around like a roaring lion,” seeking to do all sorts of evil, as St. Peter tells us in his letter.

The devil, in fact, with his tentacles, he wants to divert our existencelead us to commit sins that can only stain our soul and, in some cases, even our very life. All means that could, then, lead us to hell.

The devil causes a series of disorders, physical or psychological, not easily distinguishable by common observation. Sometimes, he also creates problems that appear to be purely natural causes, even causing small accidents. Or again, the person may feel strange, led to do bad and no longer good actions: that too is the work of the devil on us.

It helps us against the snares of the devil

Apparently they seem like simple things, of little importance, but in reality they are the hand of the devil who, even with trivial things, is slowly making space in our existence. In these cases, everything can be avoided if you manage to prevent the reaction by chasing away the devil away with a simple Sign of the Cross, made with Holy Water. When you experience these strange sensations, you need to intervene early to restore serenity.

Furthermore, holy water, being a sacramental, helps us to prevent and free ourselves from venial sins, when we carry it with us.

The help that Holy Water can provide in healing from illnesses cannot be ruled out either. gives us the opportunity to receive the Help of the Holy Spiritfor the good of our soul and body.

Holy water can also help the souls of our deceased loved ones: every time we use it to make the Sign of the Cross, praying for the souls in purgatorymany of these are relieved of their suffering.

Not a simple sacramental, but something that gives value and protection to our soul.
