PALERMO – “Control of the territory with optical and thermal sensors and cameras, agreements with the Fire Department and Civil Protection to have dedicated teams on days of particular heat and fire risk. For the first time we have a preventive plan that also comes from the experience of the last two years”.

The mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagalla, said this this morningpresenting the fire prevention plan to the command of the municipal police in via Ugo La Malfa.

“Particular attention will be paid to the control of the Bellolampo landfill, entrusted to Rap, and of Montepellegrino – added Lagalla -. Last year, the city suffered significant damage. We are working with the Region to guarantee compensation and for the return of people who had to leave their homes damaged by the flames. We have also updated the Civil Protection plan. On hot days, some areas, such as the Favorita park, may be closed off”.

The Sicilia Foundation, chaired by Maricetta Di Natale, also financed the fire prevention plan. The presentation of the plan was attended by the prefect Massimo Mariani, the councilor for the municipal police Dario Falzone and the commander of the municipal police Angelo Colucciello.

“95 percent of fires are intentional,” Colucciello explained. With the camera system we hope to also identify those responsible for the fires”.
