Bad weather in Turin today, it’s an emergency: the updates

TURIN. Wind and rain storm in Turin: trees fell in Turin, while a hailstorm hit. Numerous streets and cellars were flooded. Just today, meanwhile, the president of Piedmont, Alberto Cirio, signed the request for a state of emergency intended for the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the Minister of Civil Protection Nello Musumeci and the head of the Civil Protection department, Fabrizio Curcio, after the violent rainfall which hit Piedmont last weekend in the provinces of Verbano Cusio Ossola, Turin and Vercelli.

In particular, the territory of the Anzasca Valley and Divedro Valley of the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, the Alta Val Sesia in the province of Vercelli and the Alta Val Susa, Valli di Lanzo, Valli Orco and Soana and Canavese of the Metropolitan City of Turin were involved. An initial estimate of the interventions necessary for the urgent sums and for the immediate restoration of the damage caused by the disturbance, which amount to approximately 25 million euros, has also been completed, based on the inspections carried out in these hours by the technicians of the public works department of the Region and by the Civil Protection teams.

Inspections will continue in the coming days to define the reconstruction and risk reduction interventions that will need to be implemented in the coming weeks. In fact, at the moment it is necessary to wait for the river levels to return to be able to evaluate the erosion of the slopes and banks and have a complete picture of the situation.

«I want to thank those who have been in the field with their work for days – says Cirio – to support the places affected by the rains and to allow the safety of roads and rivers to be restored. We were hit by a very violent phenomenon, which fortunately did not cause any victims and which we managed to contain thanks to the professionalism of our teams and also thanks to the safety works carried out in the area in recent years”. «In just a few hours, around 200 millimeters of rain fell – explains the Civil Protection councilor, Marco Gabusi – which, even more so considering the mountain area involved, constitutes a true exceptionality. Thanks to mayors, firefighters and the civil protection system, in a few hours the people who risked being isolated were made safe and a liveable situation in the territories was restored.”

The mountain councilor Marco Gallo is ready to organize a meeting with the mountain unions Valli Orco and Soana, Valli di Lanzo and Valli dell’Ossola to take stock of the wounded mountain, studying possible interventions that go beyond those related to the request for a state of emergency advanced by President Cirio. “Climate change – he explains – is one of the most complex challenges to face especially in a region with an orography such as that of Piedmont that often accentuates the phenomena, just as has happened in the last few hours in Canavese and Verbano making the hydrogeological stability of the entire system more fragile. For this reason I believe it is important to team up to create synergies that strengthen the mountain territory”.
